Mário Vieira de Carvalho is a Senior Professor of Sociology of Music and Chairman of CESEM (Centre for Research on Sociology and Aesthetics of Music) at Lisbon’s Universidade Nova (FCSH). He is also member of the European Lyric Theatre Academy (Europäische Musiktheaterakademie - Vienna). He worked as Chairman of the Scientific Council of FCSH and Vice-Rector of Lisbon’s Universidade Nova (2003-2004) and held two terms as President of the Scientific Commitee of the Department of Musicology (1987-1990 and 1996-1998). From 2005 to 2008 he was Secretary of State for Culture. He is a scientific advisor of the magazine 'Theory, Culture & Society'. As Joachim Herz assistant he collaborated in dramaturgy and staging Alban Berg’s Wozzeck Opera (Dresden, 1984). As a visiting professor he conducted Sociology of Music courses at Humboldt University in Berlin (2000), Innsbruck (2001), São Paulo (2002) and Minho University (2004). Mário Vieira de Carvalho has a graduation in Law from the University of Lisbon (1968) and completed a PhD in Musicology at the Humboldt University of Berlin (1985). He published over one hundred papers and books on history, aesthetics and sociology of music, and wrote more than a thousand texts as a music critic.
